From Rod's diary:

When we take a big production out on tour – which is pretty well always – we usually find somewhere a bit off the beaten track to prepare the show. We take about a week in a large hall with good staging and rigging points to 'fly' the lights and some of the PA. The first few days are crew only getting everything up and tested and ironing out any last minute technical problems.

The band then go in for final rehearsals and a run through the full set a couple of times with full lighting ,PA and pyro. This is very important for the pyro so they know where to stand at certain times so as not to get blown up – which has happened occasionally. We then play if possible a pre-tour show to sort out any last minute glitches – or at least that is what we hope! It's also a thankyou to the fans in that area who usually treat us very well. And this time was no exception so thanks to all you fans for making us so welcome these last few days. And with Janick especially in town l'm sure the local bars were happy.

This time the place was St. John in New Brunswick, Canada which is on the Eastern seaboard and quite away from any large cities and, more importantly, any major media centres as we ,like anyone else, like to make our mistakes quietly and out of the press.

Also St John can be a trial to get to which would put off many journos looking for a scoop – as l found out to my cost, taking 38 hours to get from my home in Sussex to the hotel in St John. British Airways were 3 hours late when l left on Friday the 9th so l missed my connection out of Boston so had to stay there overnight. However this wasn't so bad as coincidentally Merck was in town with one of our other bands, KULA SHAKER, who played a blinding gig at the Karma club so all was most certainly not lost. Anyway it was up bright and early the next day to set off for SJ changing at Halifax Nova Sotia. It was a beautiful day and all went well until the weather closed in near to SJ and we couldn't land!! So it was off to Fredericstown and then a cab back to SJ......but we got there in the end......and the ride was OK as the scenery was amazing-this really is a very beautiful part of the world with massive forests, lakes and the sea.

So on arrival it was straight down to the gig to check out the show with the band-and it looked just great. For personal reasons H was unable to be there that day so we had a run through running tapes and went through the whole show in terms of lights and pyro but Steve is telling you more about all this so l'll leave it.
From Steve's diary:

Pre-Production in St John, Canada

After finishing rehearsals in Lille, France, I flew to St John Canada (with a stop over for a couple of days business in New York on the way). St John is a beautiful part of the world, and the people are very friendly, so it made a great place to do pre-production rehearsals, as they have a perfect venue for this kind of thing and we were able to do a warm up gig in the same place.

Pre-production is definitely needed with a brand new big show production like this because everybody has to work at lighting, pyro cues etc., plus obviously on and off stage sound levels have to be sorted so that everybody's satisfied. It makes a big difference to everybody's performance if we are comfortable with everything what's going on around us. We all saw a model of the stage set when we were doing a load of press in Amsterdam back in March, and it looked great, but there is always a worry that it might not turn out as grand as you would like it in reality. We shouldn't have worried - it looks fantastic! The set itself and the lights are superb.

So then it was a question of getting down to sorting our on stage monitor levels, which surprisingly didn't take long – considering there's six of us! We just ran through a few songs and we have a fairly methodical way of doing things which avoids too much chaos ( I suppose we ought to know what we're doing after the amount of tours we've done!)

The following day we were able to watch the show from out front, the only time we ever get to see it, apart from videos! Doug Hall, our ever present sound engineer, made a tape of the set in running order so that we could all watch the show with lights, production, pyro etc. and make notes of anything we didn't like, or wanted to add or whatever, as the songs were playing through the PA. I made notes throughout and afterwards the band and Rod discussed things before going through them with Martin Brennan, our lighting designer, and Dick Bell, our production manager. Martin had to programme any lighting changes, cues etc. into his computer and the set production people had to fine tune a few bits of the set. It was late, so we decided to have another run through the next morning, which was also the day of the show. We were much happier with everything after the second run through, although we still made notes, but not as many. Nicko's drums needed more light, so changes were needed again there, possibly hiring a few extras to sort the problem, but over all everything looks spectacular and Martin has done a great job, yet again!

Everybody's put so much time and effort into making this great, so thanks to all concerned. A special mention has to go to Alan Chesters, who has surpassed himself with the stage set – Ed Hunter lives!

Nicko mentions the gig in his piece, so all I'll say is that we were nervous, a little rusty, but it went very well for a first one! Hope you enjoy the show when we're in your town.

From Nicko's diary:

It's 2am on the 14th July straight after the show in Montreal. I can tell you, these fans REALLY ROCK! We hit the stage at 8.45 last night to a completely CRAZY crowd. The lights went down and the temperature went up, the fans were going nuts. We started on full octane and stayed there for a while, but I've got to say my wheels came off and I wasn't quite in the zone for a couple of songs. You know how that goes – AHHHHH! Well, never mind 'cos it settled down after a couple more songs and we got back into the groove.

This tour so far has been a blast. The band are really focused on doing a blazing show and the vibe is excellent amongst everyone. The feeling of completeness is sublime. It really is fantastic to be back together with Bruce and Adrian.

From Rod's diary:

Support Voivoid –who did all 3 gigs to date– went on around 8 and once again went down very well – you should all check them out. This was quite an unusual outdoor venue with a moat around the stage and Quebec audiences are fantastic ,just like Montreal and St, John, which is one of the reasons we started here. And they certainly didn't let us down last night, drowning out the band on occasions which ,believe me takes some doing!! Again the gig was sold out with about 6500 there and Bruce did much of the talking in French, which he is quite adept at.

Adrian Smith didn't play this show because his father had just died and he was attending the funeral. Consequently, 'Wasted Years' sounds a little bit different. There is some tampering with the volume control during some of the songs, but this one is otherwise quite error-free. The sound is bit distant. During '2 Minutes To Midnight', Bruce nicely tells a fan not to throw water on stage. During 'Wasted Years', you can also hear the guy who is taping the show bitching about people ruining his tape by not shutting up; little did he realise that he was doing more damage by bitching!

Great early concert of the Ed Hunter tour. In fact this is the seventh gig that the boys played together in this constellation. The crowd is really great. What needs to be mentioned is Killers. It sounds really awesome. Bruce is also in a good mood and says some funny things. And the sound quality is a bit above standard. Enough for a nice listen. (Blake)

Ryan's account:
Even though I had nosebleed seats (the very back corner on the right as you face the band), I still had a good time. The Greek Theater is a great venue. Soulfly opened up, and even though I don't like them, they did a good job. Next was Monster Faggot, uh, I mean Monster Magnet. They sucked. The singer was falling all over the stage as he "emotionally" sang. What a lamo. After all the torture, Maiden showed up and played an energetic show. Dave fell off stage and broke his pinky, but the band played it off pretty good like nothing major happend. Back where I was it was difficult to see what was going on. This was a great show despite a lot of bitching from Bruce.
Bruce botches the lyrics of 'Man On The Edge'.

Bruce's birthday
Good audience recording (Taped by DaveTV). The sound is muffled and the audience is a little loud sometimes, but overall the show is good. Bruce accidentally introduces 'Powerslave' as 'Phantom of the Opera'. The vocals are also missing at the beginning of 'Phantom Of The Opera' because someone was throwing some stuff towards Maiden and Bruce jumped off the stage to deal with him.

From Nicko's diary:

We played a show at the Ice Stadium here in Helsinki, there were just a little over 8000 crazy wonderful Finnish fans there. It was a little cold outside the gig but man it sure was burning inside. For this show and the next couple in Scandinavia we've taken away some of the stage set so that we can get better sight lines to the stage. The wonderful thing about this is that so many of our fans want to see us we've had to open up some more of the stage area to accommodate them. It hasn't taken anything away from the show at all, actually we all felt it was really cool being able to see a lot more of you all. Also the sound on stage was a lot better as well. We had a really great time on stage last night the vibe was really buzzing. Bruce was up to his old wonderful tricks again, you remember don't you he would always pull my cymbals away just as I was about to give them a doing. That was easy on my old Sonor kits because I had floor stands to hold the cymbals, but on the Premier's I've got a rack system which means that I don't have floor stands, all the cymbal mounts are locked on to the rack so they don't move at all. Well he's got a way around that he has, he creeps around my tubs and just as I'm about to give a particular cymbal a doing he catches it stopping the sound, it is most annoying but great fun. He got me twice last night the bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!

This bootleg was recorded at the same gig as the common High Ball Shooter. But this one is different in many points. First it's complete and secondly it has a better sound. There's just one real error: The first seconds of The Evil That Men Do are missing. Apart from that it's a really nice listen and I think that it's highly recommended! (Blake)

From Johnny B's diary:

The venue was magnificent. Not only was there the maiden gig going on but ..... five-a side football, a basketball match, ice skating demonstration and squash matches. The venue was so massive that all these things were going on at once without affecting any of the others. Blinding!

The band went on stage near enough on time. The crowd were absolutely outstanding. I am running out of superlatives on this tour but honest guv .... they just keep getting better. There was a massive crowd there and they were really, really up for it. 'Fear of the Dark' and 'Run For The Hills' were spine tingling. Bruce had some grief halfway through the show with some moronic w**ker in the crowd but .... I'll be arsed if I will give him any publicity on the web. He knows who he is and if Bruce or the band ever get near him .... they'll feed him alive and feet first to Eddie. They were REALLY pissed. However the rest of the 12,000 crowd were brilliant. They were noisy, appreciative, energetic, and really ..... well manic in evidence.

From Johnny B's diary:

We arrived at the venue, an indoor Bullring with great expectations. It was a massive venue. The gig had already been switched from it's original venue as Maiden had sold out the concert 3 weeks before the gig date. With so many people desperate to see them it made sense to switch to a larger venue and this was large. Well it seemed that way when it was empty.

The concert was intense. They venue crammed over 19,000 screaming fans into the gig and they were up for it. Boy were they up for it. Bruce was in great form as he climbed high on the stage like a trapeze artist.

This was the last concert of the tour, featuring a strange incident during '2 Minutes To Midnight', when Bruce almost stopped singing. Towards the end of the song, he signalled the others to stop playing and launched himself into one of his infamous rants. This is what happened:
During the first numbers some fans lit a few flares, obliterating the view of the stage from the audience and making it difficult for everyone – including Maiden – to breathe properly. Bruce then decided to interrupt the show during '2 Minutes to Midnight' to have a go at those who lit those flares.
