From Nicko's diary:

When we arrived the vibe was instant. The band Stray was on stage and was going down great. The audience really were enjoying them.
We all started to get changed and there was a charged feeling in the dressing room.
We have always suffered from a bit of the old stage fright and tonight was no exception.
Just as we were ready to leave for the stage Bruce said that he had a mental block on the words to the beginning of ‘Number of the beast’ so we all had a bit of a laugh and made for the stage.
Rod had already left for his usual place at the out front soundboard and we were led out and up to the stairs at the foot of the stage. There were eleven thousand Spanish fans packed into the sold out basketball arena and from the noise that they were making they sounded like a million. It was crazy. The lights went down the air went blue. I said a wee prayer and took to the stage.
This was our first touring gig in two years and four months almost to the day. So yes we were nervous.
Well you had to be there to have really got the vibe but man it was so electrifying, invigorating and just brilliant. The fans were amazing all the way throughout the show and for our first show in so long we played a great gig.
Thank you to all of our fans around the world that still keep the faith and love to rock out and especially to all of you who were at the show in La Coruna.
You made our first night so very special.
On the way back to the hotel in the van we all felt that we had played a good gig. We had a few shaky moments but we got through them with out any problems. Bruce didn’t forget the words to ‘Number’ and we had a Kin blast as we usually do.

From Nicko's diary:

We’re all heading back to Blighty today after what was a furious Kin evening.
We played Gijon last night and were amazed at the energy that was spent on stage. The sound in the room was much better than the previous evening and the fans no less enthusiastic !!! The Spanish fans are truly amazing!
We went on stage at 10'o'clock and played for close to two hours.
Rod did his usual routine of coming to the dressing room and giving us a vibe up and then went out to the soundboard. He’s been trying to cut out the oily rags, [that’s fags for you boys and girls, {cigarettes}] but every time he gets out to the mixer the old puff demons come and get him and he’s usually seen chain smoking. He must get through twenty plus when he comes to see us. ( BO***CKS – ed )
So we get on the stage with I might add a more comfortable sort of nervousness than the previous night. We all felt that the sound on stage was much better than the night before and so we had a tighter sound and performance. There was a few problems with the running of the back drops and such, and at the end of the show, large Eddie decided that he wanted more spondulies and so went on strike, he was a very naughty boy. He was supposed to make an appearance and misbehaved himself and didn’t do his bit.
Sheash, you just can’t rely on people anymore.

From Nicko's diary:

So last night we played at Le Zenith in Toulouse.
Blinding gig. The sound was great. We had a full house of five thousand and everyone had a great time. We went on stage at nine forty five and jammed out, man it was a hot one as well. I had a bit of a hard time as I was feeling a little tired from the past couple of days.

From Nicko's diary:

We had a meet and greet at 8 o’clock and then we started to get ready for the show. Everything was running a little late but we took to the stage at a little before nine o’clock.
Man the crowd of just around forty-five thousand fans went bonkers. We kicked off with Number of the Beast and then ran into a few sound problems. There was a lot of bottom end rumble running around the stage and it put us all into a kind of tilt that was a wee bit uncomfortable. It didn’t take to long to sort out and before you knew it we were running on all eight cylinders. We had a real great time. Thanks to all you boys and girls that came to see us you made it a very special night. There’s something about playing on terra firma that always moves me.

From Nicko's diary:

On the Tuesday we played in Poland. The gig was in Katowice at the Spodek. We have played there before. It was a most stunning gig. We played a blinder. The audience were fantastic and we all agreed that it was the best gig from a performance point of view so far.

So we hit the stage at 9-30pm and as I said rocked the gaff to the floor. The fans were as brilliant as they always are in Poland. We were all very happy with the bight. After the show we all hung back stage and did the usual shower thing and H, Davey and myself took in a nice drop of red wine that we are carrying on tour with us. My friend Mark Gutterres from Trans Am Trucking supplied the menu of wines for me. He’s a top man. So after a while we headed back to the hotel. After dropping our stuff off we all met in the hotel bar for a nightcap. It was a great evening. We have fond memories of this place and it wasn’t long before the old war stories started to make an appearance. All in all we had a great visit to Poland. Thank you to all our fans that came that evening.

The crowd were amazing and we all felt up at the vibe we got from everyone. Thank you Budapest for a memorable evening.

From Nicko's diary:

It was just over 90 minutes before show time. We got on stage at around 9 0-clock and had a most splendid time. The crowd had swelled to capacity over the first hour or so and we were playing to around 76,000 people. They weren’t all Maiden fans either as there was a lot of different types of music being played on the day. There was for instance; Billy Corgan's band ‘Zwan’ and The ‘Cardigans’ to name a few. So we had a pretty diverse audience going. They all seemed to love it. At the end of the show they gave us such an overwhelming response it brought a tear to me eye. When we came back on stage for the encore they just kept on shouting and clapping it was really moving.

From Nicko's diary:

After dinner I went and found a quiet room to set up my computer and watch the third episode of 24. This series is brilliant. I love the story so far and I like Kiefer Sutherland’s character Jack Bauer. Great stuff. So after the episode I had a few minutes left to make a cup of Rosie Lee [That’s Tea boys and girls]. Then Ian, [I don’t feel left out any more] Day, popped in the dressing room and informed us that the Murder Dolls had left the stage 10 minutes early so when we are ready we can go on stage a little early ourselves if we so wished. Well we were going back home to Blighty after the show so we jumped at the idea. We took to the stage at the Vienna Stadhalle and knocked everyone’s shoes off. We are definitely finding our form and had a rocking show. The capacity crowd all had a great time and so did we. Vienna you always make us feel so welcome. Thanks to all of you!

From Nicko's diary:

We played in the old Playa de Torres bullring last night. It was a very smelly place I can tell you. They have a very high season of bull fighting at this place the back stage area was very dirty. That wasn’t too bad, though the operating theatre where they take the mashed up toreadors was a little off-putting.

We were on stage at 10pm. The gig went great. We all had a great time and came off stage and, yes you guessed it we did a runner.

The gig that evening was great. Me old mate Patrick Hegan arrived after driving from Barcelona. He had dropped his cousin off at the airport and then made his way over to Madrid.
We had a blinding show. Pat said that the sound was very good.

Part of the intro of 'The Number Of The Beast' is missing. Part of the intro of 'Fear Of The Dark' is also missing. Repetitive talking of the person who recorded the bootleg and his friend takes place. On some occassions even singing takes place.
Comment by BoBo: We can't be sure is it mp3 sourced or it's recorded on MD in LP2 or LP4 mode. To me it looks more like recording in LP2/LP4 mode. I doubt we can find taper and better source, if better source even exists.

From Nicko's diary:

We arrived at the airport and did the necessary formalities and headed to the gig. It was an outdoor show at a football stadium. We were expecting around 12,000 thousand fans. We did some interviews and a small meet and greet and had a stage time of 9:15. We asked Robbie Price our production manager if we could get on stage a little early. ‘No Problem’ he said so we all thought great we’ll definitely make the airport on time so that we could get back to Blighty that evening. We only had a 15 minute window to get from the gig to the airport, as it would be closing at 11:30pm for runway maintenance. Not very much time to make it. Well would you believe it Robbie was ready for us early and we actually went on stage 5 minutes late at 9:20pm. As we were late going on we had to leave out a song on the encore. Our apologies to you boys and girls for missing a tune but I’m sure we made you happy anyway. It was a fantastic evening. You all made us feel great. Thanks again for a wonderful evening.

Oh yes I forgot to tell you. When we arrived at the gig there were messages posted all over the venue saying something like Murderdolls would like to apologies for their behaviour last night, Blah de Blah so on and so forth, as it turns out that they got pie faced the night before and were making a bunch of noise outside the crew hotel.

From Nicko's diary:

Look here we have just got off the ground after what was a fantastic ‘Kin night I can tell you. We arrived safely at Brno airport and had a drive of just over 70 kilometres to Zlin. We did get stuck in some traffic and eventually arrived at the show at a little after 6 0clock. The journey took us just under two hours.

When I arrived I had a little bit of catering and then had a play on me wee set of drums. I had an interview scheduled for 8 o-clock. So there was plenty of time to relax. We were due on stage at 9 0-clock. Everything was running on time. We hit the stage and had a ‘Kin great time the best yet for me. I think it may have had something to do with the massage that I had just before the show. I had a 20-minute rub down from 8:30 and then went straight on stage. I felt ‘Kin great! We were on fire tonight. The sound was fantastic for me on stage and I was feeling right on top of the game. The audience were magic tonight. Everyone had a blast. The venue was 8000 capacity, but somehow they managed to squeeze over 9000 fans into the place. Brilliant vibe I can tell you.

Great "Give Me Ed..." gig. The quality is a good audience recording and I heard no errors in it so far. Except that the Clairvoyant is missing. Or haven't the boys played it? I don't know... (Ead666)
Maverick's comment: I don't remember.
Bruce makes fun of the Swiss laws concerning the sound level that shouldn't exceed 100dB and even tells the audience not to scream too loud or they'll have to arrest themselves!

From Nicko's diary:

The drive to the show took just on one hour. We were supposed to have a police escort to get us through the traffic but it seemed that his blue ‘Kin lights and siren didn’t work as we were stuck in ‘Kin traffic with the venue in sight. Typical. Waste of time.
So we get to the show and I had an interview and then met with a few guys from my cymbal company Paiste. Danny Zimmermann from artist relations was there with a few of the guys from the factory. Steffen and Bruno and a couple of others were with them...

Very medicore recording this one. There's a lot of hiss, the sound volume is very low and you can sometimes here the sounds of a mobile phone. The gig itself is very good but Bruce just introduces the songs very short, especially in the second half of the gig. That's very strange for him. I only recommend this one to the hardcore collectors. (Blake)

From Nicko's diary:

Well we had a show at Graspop in Belgium on Saturday. We all met up at the airport for a 5:30 flight. We were due on stage at 11:30pm so we didn’t need to leave until quite late. The flight only took a little over 45 minutes. We flew into Brussels and then had a 1-hour drive to the show. Once we were there we had a bunch of interviews to do. We were done with these by 9 in the evening.

Alice Cooper was on stage so I popped up to see him and his band. They were jamming. I also bumped into me old mate Charlie Benanti.
He was looking great and said that he had had a great show. I would have liked to see the boys jamming.

So we hit the stage and had a great show. Only draw back to the evening was the ‘Kin weather. It got really cold on stage and I was feeling it I can tell you. I had to send Pete to get me robe so that in between songs I could try to stay warm. ‘Kin middle of the summer it shouldn’t be that cold. BURRRR!!

It was a great show though! The fans were fantastic and made up for the ‘Kin cold with their warmth. God Bless you all. You were great!!!

First though I have to tell you about our show in Lisbon on Wednesday night.
Cor blimey mateys. It was blinding. The Portuguese fans went absolutely bonkers, I can tell you. We had a great time. The show was fantastic. There was a little problem with a few idiot fans that decided that they wanted to ‘Kin beat people up instead of having a good time.
Sheesh, what a bunch of prats. The gig was great we played out of our shoes that night.

We left for the show at 9 in the evening, my friend Patrick Hegan was at the hotel and was waiting there when we left. He was meeting some friends of his so he didn’t travel with us to the venue. The gig was only a short drive from the hotel. Stage time was 10:30pm.

We went on on time and had a fantastic show. All the guys were on top of the game and we really enjoyed the Spanish fans. There wasn’t any crazy stuff going on either, that makes a difference to how you feel and play. When we got to the point in the show when we play ‘The Clansman’ I turned around and found me mate Pat had taken up his usual position behind me. He likes this song. He’s a bit of a tub-thumper himself and likes to watch me play this tune.

That evening it was blowing a gale out there and we were doing a festival. It was a little bit worrying to say the least to look up and watch the lighting truss swinging harder than we were, I can tell you. Very worrying indeed. On the same bill was Mr Dio’s band and I got to see Jimmy Bain just as we were going on stage. I also saw me old mate Mickie Dee and Phil from Motorhead. They were all having a great time. I shall see them all at the end of this week [21st July], as they are both on the same bill with us in the U.S. So we took to the stage and jammed our last show on the European leg of the tour. It was a great gig to finish on we all had a great time.

Thanks to all of you that came to our shows all over the continent. You made this tour the best yet for us.

From Nicko's diary:

I have just got back from our first American show on this tour. We played in a great venue called the Centrum.

We took to the stage at 9:25pm and played for a little over 90 minutes.
As there are three bands on the bill, we’ve had to cut a few tunes from the set.
I wish we didn’t have to do that but what can you do when there is not enough time. We cut 22 Acacia Avenue, Heaven can wait and 2 minutes to midnight.

The set seemed to fly by. I had a lot of problems with me monitor system tonight, There was a lot of distortion due to Harry’s bass rig playing up. I hope Michael, Harry’s tech, can sort it out by tomorrow.

Well over all it was a pretty good gig. There is a big difference playing here to playing in Europe. The fans over the water are very intense, where as here they all seem a bit more laid back. We were still firing on all cylinders though. We left the stage to a great reaction and all had a great time regardless.

2 Minutes To Midnight

Bruce rants a lot during this gig, mainly against MTV and the like. Towards the end of the show, he praises the New Jersey audience for being the best audience so far and for never letting Maiden down. Then he proceeds to introduce the band nembers by name and also makes a few joking comments about Janick having managed to get drunk in every single town Maiden has ever played so far.
During 'Fear Of The Dark', Bruce changes the lyrics to "New Jersey in the dark".

From Nicko's diary:

Friday evening we had a show in New Jersey at the PNC Bank Arts Centre. It’s only forty miles out of the city but with a 4 o-clock leave it took me nearly 3 hours to get there. It was a nice journey though as I had some wonderful company. Me pal Steve Smith and his lovely lady Jan have popped over from blighty to be with me at our MSG show on Wednesday next week. They arrived at midnight on Thursday. I didn’t think that they may have liked to just kick back for the day, but they came with me and we had a wonderful time. I also have a very beautiful new black Jag in me possession at the moment. James Thomas who works for Jag U.S.A arranged for me to have it for the ten days that I’m in NY. It’s an XJR. Very very quick motor I can tell you.

Well the journey went really quick as we were in such a nice jam jar. The show was blinding. The band is definitely firing on all cylinders.
The audience were brilliant. You know that don’t you?
Yes I know is said previously that the American audiences are a bit laid back, well even I can be wrong once in a while, right!!!!!
They were really loud and into the whole evening. Motorhead and Dio were brilliant as well, everyone had a great time.

Iron Maiden Drummer Arrested After Allegedly Driving Into Lot Attendant
07.28.2003
Michael 'Nicko' McBrain charged with third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment.

Five dates into Iron Maiden's U.S. leg of the Give Me Ed... 'Til I'm Dead Tour, the band's drummer, Michael "Nicko" McBrain, was arrested for allegedly purposely driving his black Jaguar into a parking attendant before a concert at the Tommy Hilfiger at Jones Beach Theater.

The 51-year-old drummer was trying to pull into the Wantagh, New York, venue's VIP parking lot on Saturday at around 8:30 p.m. when he was stopped by attendant Mark Robinson, who asked for credentials, state park police said. McBrain flashed his identification, but the attendant couldn't see it clearly and asked to view it again.

McBrain told the attendant he would hit him if he didn't move out of the way. The attendant didn't budge, so McBrain inched forward and struck him in the legs. The attendant backed up, but stood his ground, so the drummer warned him that if he didn't move, he'd be struck again. McBrain then drove the car more forcibly into Robinson, who fell on the hood of the Jaguar. Robinson suffered bruises on his right hand and legs, and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for examination.

Police arrested McBrain at the scene and charged him with third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. After the arrest was processed, the drummer was released on an "appearance ticket," which allowed him to play the show. McBrain is scheduled to appear at First District Court of Nassau County in Hempstead, New York, on September 16. If convicted, McBrain could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Iron Maiden's management had no comment.

– Jon Wiederhorn
From Nicko's diary:

It’s been a while since me last diary hasn’t it boys and girls, yes lots has happened since me last entry.
Loads of great gigs, lots of parties, and lots of getting into various forms of trouble, [That being me middle name and such].

Well let me see, where were we when I last wrote me diary. Oh yes the night before Jones beach. You may have heard about that incident. I would just like to thank the park police Nassau County for helping get me to the gig.
So we get on stage and the gig went great. It was very windy though and the on stage sound was a bit weird.

After that we headed back to New York City. Me misses was not amused at what had happened but we did have a nice evening back at the hotel, some friends of ours had been at the show and came back to the hotel and we had a party into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The next day we played Madison Square Garden.
Well that was a great night I can tell you. Me old mate Danny Clifford and his missus Linda came over from blighty to take a few smudges of the boys, me old mate Frank Coe was there, Jean Jennings and [Tim the photographer] from Automobile Magazine, [James and Verity Thomas [from Jaguar U.S.A] Kevin Mapp, [me golf guru from Florida] and Gage, Kevin’s girlfriend's son, Danny Spitz, Mike Piazza and his lovely girl friend, Steve Smith and Jan, and a hole bunch of friends from our office in New York and it was wonderful. The show was blinding, we seem to shine even more at these types of shows. I don’t know whether it’s because of the prestige of the venue itself or the pressure of the event, perhaps a little of both, anyway it was a cracker of a show.

From Nicko's diary:

On Friday the 1 of August we left N.Y for Canada. Our first show was in Quebec City. We left on a charter flight and arrived into the city at around 5 in the evening. This was the first of three shows in Canada.

Well I can tell you this show and Montreal were most definitely on the top five list of Maiden shows ever. The audience and the way we played at these two gigs were unsurpassable. ‘Kin amazing nights. The only way to explain this is you had to be there to feel it. Magic couple of nights.

We headed out to Troy Michigan just up the road from Detroit. The gig used to be known as Pine Knob, for some strange reason the name has been changed to DTE Energy Centre.

The gig was great but the sound for me was a little weird as the backdrop drapes were really close behind me and so acted as a sound baffle. My sound didn’t have any drive to it. It was a great show though none the less.

At the end of 'Die With Your Boots On', Bruce thanks those who have come from Mexico, then asks the fans not to throw anything on stage just before 'Revelations'. As an introduction to 'The Clansman', Bruce says that when they tour the States, people come to the show and wonder what these new songs are because the last album they bought was Piece Of Mind. He mentions that Maiden don't care about these people because they are not true fans and dedicates the song to the true fans. At the end of 'Iron Maiden', Bruce asks what time the bars close and says "2AM" in a surprised voice. Then, he says that they should get a move on because they are losing valuable drinking time, thanks crowd and introduces the band.

From Nicko's diary:

We had a show in Phoenix that evening and it was a doozie. It was 100 degrees on stage and we were burning up in more ways than one. I unfortunately pulled a rib or something half way through the second song and was in a fairly bad way I can tell you!

Pete, my drum tech, helped me by massaging the affected area but I needed some professional help. He called the masseuse back as she had left the venue. She arrived back and got to work on me back. She reckoned that I had a dislocated rib. How weird. Well she worked on as I’m playing. It was very strange. She did get me out of pain and back into the gig though. Thank you! I didn’t get her name but you were a lifesaver thanks.

So we did a pretty good gig although we were all feeling a bit worse for wear from the heat. ‘Kin amazing it was 9:25pm when we went on and it was still close to 100 degrees when we came off.

From Rod's diary:

Gig went pretty well for a first show. Usual minor problems on timing of intros just like the start of any tour. Band got into it well for a first show , especially as there are some complex songs in the set like Dance of Death. Set works well, l think you fans will enjoy it!! A lot of new songs, some we haven’t played for a while, some classics. Production looked superb and lights came together well for a first show. All in all a good start.....and a fantastic audience. If you were there... THANKS!
From Nicko's diary:

We played our first show in Debecen, Hungary on Sunday and it was a bit nerve racking all round.
We hit the stage at 9:15pm playing to a sold out gig. The stage set looks amazing and we have a very complex running order with many new songs from the Dance of Death album mixed in with some firm favourites.
We all felt the old dreaded stage nerves and were all fired up for the first gig. We did have a few hiccups during the show. Mainly continuity problems like intro tapes coming in late and on occasion not coming in at all. Hey that’s what the first couple of shows are all about. Getting the flow right and being settled with the program.

The show went well and the 5000 fans were on great form. Both the show and the band are already beginning to gel which of course is the point of these "warm up" shows. It always takes a few gigs for everything to come fully together and there is a lot of new material and a lot of things to get right with the new production, especially lighting and intro tape cues. Eddie of course has to look his best too!! But so far so good. Fortunately our crew have been with us for a while and really do know what they are doing and we have full confidence in them. There is just a lot to think about in the early stages.
From Nicko's diary:

It is Tuesday and we have a show in Banska Slovakia. We leave the hotel for the airport at 3:30pm.
We arrive at the venue after a 40-minute flight and the good news was that we are on stage at 8:15pm.
The support act is a band named Gamma Ray. They were on stage at 7pm. The gig was at an old ice hockey rink so it was a wee bit chilly in the gig.
We had a much better show last night than the first gig. Doug our sound engineer had re-recorded the intro tapes and the continuity was pretty much on the ball. We played a blinder although I had a bit of a wobble on Paschendale. My ride cymbal broke off from the stand and ended up in my lap and covering the snare drum. PANIC set in as I had to stop playing to enable me to sling the culprit onto the floor, then on top of that I played one to many around the bridge riff and ended up playing on my own. Oh well we soldiered on, no pun intended, and the gig finished on a high note. Fantastic the audience on both nights were incredible. Thank you all for making our first Dance of Death shows so special. My love to you all for a great couple of nights.

Not too much better than its horrible twin Banska 2003, again we find a show with no mistakes but with poor recording, too much crowd noise again and a taper machine that couldn’t handle the volume and intensity of the show, again the highlight of the bootleg is my design of covers that is as in Banska simply magnificent! From Nicko's diary:

Well, we had a blinding show here in Prague. We took to the stage at 9:15 and played to a sold out gig. We had a few mistakes but nothing that we couldn’t handle. I made a ‘Kin blazing mistake in Paschendale. I went to go into the bridge after the second verse but I’m supposed to stop and go into the solos. I managed to swerve around it though and all was not lost.
The gig went great the crowd were fantastic as always in Prague.

MUNICH 2003

Olympiahalle
Munich – GERMANY
24th October 2003
From Rod's diary:

Show went well. Very good audience, nearly sold out with about 9000. The show is really starting to look good now as the various tape and lighting cues get more rehearsed and some adjustments we made to the show over the first 3 gigs are put into place. Paschendale in particular is awesome. Also the more they play, the tighter the band get. It is always very satisfying at this stage to see band and production take shape and just get better and better.
From Nicko's diary:

Last nights show was a stormer. We played really well and there were only a couple of dodgy moments but all in all a great show. The continuity is fantastic and the LIGHTS, well, they are beautiful. Our Prince of Darkness is right on the ball at present, no telling though how long that that will last, TEE HEE!

Well back to the gig last night. It was really cool. We had close to 10,000 billies in and we all had a blast.

From Nicko's diary:

So, last night we played at the Schleyerhalle in Stuttgart.
A most splendid event it was as well. We went on stage at our normal time of 9:15pm and boy did we have a great show. The band were fired up I can tell you. There were little errors here and there but the over all vibe was brilliant. The audiences have been exceptional at all of our shows so far, and last night the crowd were amazing. We played to a sold out venue of over 12,000 billies. ‘Kin great time I can tell you.
It was definitely the best that we’ve played so far. The lights and continuity was spot on. I love this new set. It feels really special. It’s the first time we’ve used a theatrical set up like this. It works great. We hope that you lot think so too!

From Nicko's diary:

We played in Madrid last night and boy was it a weird show. We hit the stage at 9:30pm and all was going really well until some bright ‘Kin idiot decided to open a ‘Kin door or something and all of a sudden the stage temperature went down to what felt like zero.

Bruce noticed it first and then Steve. I had my cooling fans working blowing cool air on me and that suddenly went freezing so I had Pete turn them off. It was not very comfortable I can tell you. A message was sent out to try and find out the reason for the sudden temperature drop but it didn’t get any better. We played well but Bruce really felt it more than the rest of us. It made singing a lot more difficult. He was not amused and neither were the rest of us. I thought we played well considering. The audience were the loudest yet. ‘Kin fantastic you lot in Madrid. I guess the cold really worked you lot up as well! TEE HEE.
Great night all considered.

Taped with a mp3 recorder. This is the last gig before Maiden had to re-schedule a few shows of the european leg of the Dance Of Death tour due to Bruce having a throat infection. You can clearly hear this in this bootleg: he can't reach the high notes and he also introduces the songs very briefly. The quality is decent at the beginning of the recording, but worsens as the show proceeds.

From Nicko's diary:

I left for the gig at 7:45pm and caught Funeral for a Friend. They went down, at first, like a fart in a two-man submarine, but as they went on they won over the crowd. They’re a really good band. I like them and so did Frankfurt, cool.

We hit the stage at 9:15pm, our usual time, and we had a good gig but Bruce was feeling a wee bit under the weather. I knew that ‘Kin Madrid gig did him in!!!!!!
So we played OK but it wasn’t quite the same with Bruce only firing on 6 cylinders and no supercharge. The audience were fantastic and were with him all the way. We still had a great time and the fans were brilliant.
Thank you Frankfurt!!!

From Nicko's diary:

That day we had a show at the Globe in Stockholm.
The Swedish fans are some of the best ever in the Whole wide world. We had a most splendid gig that night I can tell you. We played as though it was the first gig. We were on fire.
The crowd were truly magic that night.
Thank you Stockholm and all you boys and girls that waited for us at the hotel. It was a wee bit cold to say the least and you were there for a long time. Again, thank you all.

Hanover was a great show. We could only put half the show in the venue, as the ceiling was quite low. We couldn’t use big Ed at the back either. Well the show still went really well. We are playing so well at the moment. The set is truly awesome. Paschendale is getting better and better the more times we play it.

From Nicko's diary:

I left at 7pm and went to the venue with Bruce and Ian. I had a wee interview with BBC TV. After that it was getting close to show-time, one problem though, the old ‘Helloweens’ were playing a little over-time so I popped up on to the stage and read them the riot act as they were ending their last tune, Bloody cheek, It was there first show with us on this tour and they went over time. I was not amused. It was fun going up there, though I think the audience were a wee bit confused, OH WELL!!!!

So we hit the stage just about on time and we had a fantastic gig. The Paris audiences are always so good. We had a wonderful time.
The gig went great and we were all very happy with the way it went.

From Nicko's diary:

The Sheffield gig was fantastic. We played very well and all of us enjoyed the show. I had a spot of grief with me back halfway through The Trooper. I pulled a wee muscle in me back. Fortunately there was a little time before the next song so I sent me tech, Rusty, out to locate Peter Lockrantz. He’s usually in the pit at show time, so I popped out from behind me tubs to see if I could see him. I went over to Harry and asked if he’d seen him but he hadn’t. Just as I got back behind me kit Pete was there. He worked hard and well on the area that was hurting me and it helped immensely. It was a lot better after he had finished.

No real problems or bad mistakes tonight, although I might add that some geezer on the bulletin board seems to think that I played out of time on a few tunes. ’Kin cheek. What is he thinking?
Well we had a blast I can tell you..

Notes from Caveman Ninja: Okay, I wasn't gonna buy 3 Iron Maiden tickets and not go down the front of any of the gigs! So while I went down the front, my mate Mac recorded it from the back. But he screwed up, and only got the first 80 minutes so this is one cd, which finishes just before the end of Fear of the Dark. (gutted!) There are a few minor skips from the source disk which I couldn't fix, and the sound isn't as good as on the other 2 recordings (Glasgow/Earls Court). But it is better than I initially thought it would be. Again, I don't know how it sounds compared to other copies of this gig. 1 cd, recorded by Caveman Ninja.

Gebs's review: The crowd on the night was around 7500 on this 8000 capacity event ranging from oldies like me to very young kids. At the start there is a lot of 'Moshing' and looked very dangerous from where I was sitting. This resulting in BD stopping for a few and announcing to the crowd not to shove etc... (twice actually....later on also). The sound in the event was way...way loud and the Drum kick and Bass were very prominant at this event and shook the seats. Basically a wall of sound....I have never heard anything as loud before btw. A great performance by the band.....until they blew the fuses on Paschendale and the event stopped for about 4-5 mins until it was repaired...hence the title. I missed the first 10 secs or so on the restart to Paschendale due to this :( Once recovered...the performance again becomes great also. Very few flaws in the performance and the show in my opinion was Excellent. Anyway Enjoy the show....sorry about the distortion.... :( As they say there's always next time.

From Nicko's diary:

I arrived into Manchester and had a doctor on call waiting for me at the hotel. On the train journey from Scotland, me pal Patrick was on the same train and he looked after me for the journey. I was in a bit of a pickle I can tell you. Thank you, Pat.

Well, after seeing the doc, I had a wee snooze and then got ready for the show. I wasn’t feeling like I could do it but, hey, the show must go on.
I made some very silly errors and a doozy of a mistake in Wildest dreams, the guys did really well and got me back on track.
My apologies to all our fans that were there that evening for me less than 100% performance.

Taped By MaidenEssex. At 7:31 after 'No More Lies' there is a small beep and 7 seconds of silence. Part of the introduction to 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' is missing.
Anyway one of his first recordings and the microphones couldn’t handle the intensity of the show so the sound is not the best, also he had a movement over Dance of death which caused some seconds of low volume, over Paschendale we find a little mistake from the transference from MD to CD which created a digital error, and Hallowed be thy name starts later like 30 second. Info by Jon:

Crowd Warning Part:
Fellows, Just have a little bit of light down here. We love places with no seats, alright, but you gotta be careful down there guys, because its gone down twice in the middle, thats how people get squished, thats how people get carried out on stretchers, alright. Can we do a little deal, everybody around there, if you see people go down, take two steps back and give them a chance to get up, alright, is that cool? This of course, only applies to you, the people who paid for expensive seats have got their bums moulded to the chairs of course, up the top there. I see them, still..ah , what it is to be young..

Rant 1:
Good evening to you all, Earls Court, London, wherever you're from. I'd like to say that this was a very select gathering this evening, but theres actually another 70,000 people we played to in England, Scotland andreland, and Wales on this tour as well as you guys tonight.
And the one thing I remember about this tour is when we had a single out, that the radio said, as usual, oh iron maiden, we're not going to play that old shit again, lets play something else that's cool. and then we had to drag various members of the press kicking and screaming saying hey, you know what, people really like this stuff, and just because you think you're fucking clever doesn't mean you've got a right to ignore what everybody else believes. And we do that, we do that every time we have a tour, every time we release a record, we have to kick people up the ass, and try to persuade them to write about us, and actually, I really dont think it matters, because what matters is only the reality that you are the people who put the records in the charts, and you are the people who buy the tickets.
So when the album this year, when the album this year went to number two, it was nothing to do with the music press, it was nothing to do with MTV, it was nothing to do with Radio 1, it was nothing to do with Capital, it was nothing to do with XFM. It was everything and only to do with you, and we salute you for that. So having said all that, and having bullshitted for long enough, if you can remember the movie The Exorcist, anybody, you know the bit where the head goes ... 180 degrees, turns around, I would like you to mentally do that now, and welcome you to the Dance of Death.

Rant 2:
Oh bloody hell... Take a look at yourselves. This is uh, this is quite something this, isn't it? Well... well, thank you for giving all of us the best christmas present that we've had in a long, long while. But we would, we would like to just mention, before we uh carry on and do strange things this evening, that theres a couple of rumours going round that we want to clear up. First of all, this is not the last tour that Iron Maiden are going to do and secondly, and just as important, we are not going to give up making new albums anytime soon. So, I figured that we would give you a chance to do a bit of singing on this next tune, because I know you've been making a bit of an effort so far this evening and its not been bad, frankly. But the next song has a few elements in it that, well, are a bit tough, so we'll see how you get on.
But first let me introduce my partners in crime this evening; Over here on the guitar, Mr. Janick Gers. Also playing a piece of wood over here, Mr. Dave Murray. Equally fond of his wood, Mr. Smith over here, Mr. Adrian Smith. Nicko McBrain, a man surrounded 24 hours by wood. Theres nobody here from the FBI is there? He's wanted in several states for a crime he did not commit, yes indeed, the man they could not hang, Mr. Nicko McBrain, let me hear it again. And last but definitely not least, on the bass guitar, Mr. Steve Harris.
From Nicko's diary:

The next show was in London at Earls Court. I was still feeling like death warmed up and was not sure whether I could actually do the show. I arrived at 7pm and went straight to the band lounge for a rest.

So it was show time and we hit the stage at 8:50pm. I got through the show but at a cost. I was absolutely shagged out after and I couldn’t face meeting all me friends and family at the after show party. I took a wee while to calm down and then got dressed and made a swift exit.

It was not a very nice thing too do. The sound desk went down for the encore; consequently the drums and bass disappeared from the PA. ‘Kin FOOLS.

From Nicko's diary:

We were all feeling a little nervous, as we had not played for close to three weeks. We arrived at the gig and got ready for the sold out show. There were around 45 thousand fans at the sports stadium. We hit the stage at around 9:15pm and we had a doozey of a show. It was really rockin.
Not bad for three weeks off I can tell you. After the gig we did a runner back too the hotel and after a shower we all met in the bar.

The Number Of The Beast
Run To The Hills
Taped by AcesHigh: Well, that was my first time trying to record a Maiden gig, and all I can say is that it was really a nightmare. Imagine a sould-out stadium, with about 45.000 ppl, jumping and screaming, add to that a windy night and a sound that was awful. Ok, now you´ll know how it was to record it, and I can say that despite of all those things, I got really happy with the final result of this recording. Some things to be said, 'till Rainmaker I was a little bit more to the front, and the sound there was a little bit clearer but with lots of clappers and screamers. During this song I made the decision to go to the back as there was more 2 speakers there, that´s why the volume gets a little louder during the end of Rainmaker. That night Maiden got a golden disc for Dance Of Death in Brasil. The sound itself I could rating it as a B/B+, which is pretty good taking note of the coditions that his bootleg was recorded.

Taped by Mike B. This is a nice audience recording with all instruments coming through loud and clear; the only reason it's not being graded higher is because of a minimal amount of ever-present high-end distortion (i.e., fuzziness), which typically means the taper's levels were set a bit too high. From Nicko's diary:

Second gig was also going great guns until during Iron Maiden some idiot on the balcony right over the mixing desk decided to chuck his full beer onto the desk. And we all know what happens when water (American beer??!!) meets electricity.....pow!! Desk dead. 'Kin Idiot!!!!
We didn't know what on earth was happening, finished the song, came off and then found out. Hell of a racket coming out of PA. Our sound man Dougie did his best to fix it but it just wasn't possible. So the audience and ourselves were left high and dry.....no encores. It was a bit like having sex but no orgasm.AAAHHHEEE!!!
It felt like a job left undone. We were really sorry for the fans. It was a Saturday night and we knew a lot had come an awful long way to get to the gig. But what can you do. We all went back on stage and Bruce explained what had gone down. The crowd was fantastic – they understood what had happened and we couldn't do anything and actually gave us a standing ovation (which was actually very touching in the circumstances) Fantastic Thank you to all of you for understanding, 'Kin magic!!
We are often very proud of the attitude of the majority of our fans and this really was one of those times.

After the gig Davey, H and I did a runner back too the hotel. We were feeling a wee bit down from what had happened so we had a few libations to help ease the feeling!
From Rod's diary:

Its Sunday morning and already l see many posts in the forum. On behalf of the band and myself all of you have our symapathy , especially the many of you who travelled great distances to be there.
This gig sold out in a matter of minutes when it went on sale last december and we know, being the weekend show, a lot of you travelled in from many parts of the USA and Canada.
For those who arent sure what happened, some idiot in the first couple of rows on the mezzanine above the mixing desk thought it was a good idea to chuck his beer in the air rather then down his throat.
It landed on the desk blowing too many channels to be retrievable. This prevented us playing any encores. We are very sorry for the fans there and we know you know there was absolutely nothing we could do.
Believe me the band were gutted. It was a great gig up til then. Thanks from the band for the good natured way you accepted this bad news – we always say Maiden fans are the best.

Maybe we will see some of you again on Monday or Tuesday and to anyone else coming along, remember beer is to be drunk not thrown at a gig. And to the idiot who caused this, l do hope you learned a lesson.

From Nicko's diary:

Monday was our third show. Everything went great, steaming gig. And it was Janick's birthday so of course in true Maiden tradition we gave him a good pie-ing , lots of lovely cream cakes in the mush. Although this did come back to haunt us later!!

Anyway all sorts of stuff was going down between Rod, our agents and the promoters. These gigs apparently all went on sale early last December. But the promoter got in touch to say there had been a mistake with the hall and it was double booked with an exhibition of some sort and that we couldn't play. ARE YOU 'KIN SURE OR WHAT!! Of course Rod's reaction was to tell them to go sort it out, we are contracted, a load of tickets have been sold – WE ARE PLAYING. Everyone reckoned that things would be sorted out, especially as, believe it or not, the Hammerstein's own website was advertising all four nights even that weekend before!! Despite saying we couldn't play! Rod tried everything right down to Monday evening but in the end we just ran out of time. Bad as it was for us, its tragic for all the all fans with tickets, We got word out as best we could and the metal 'jungle drums' were very supportive. In all the time we have been together we have never experienced anything as ridiculous as this. All we can realy do is make sure all the fans with tickets for the fourth night get a chance for the best tickets next time we come to NY.

Despite all this the fans that did get to see us were as brilliant as ever and we had a great time on stage at least most of the time. And it certainly hasn't put us off playing in NY. Thank you NY.

LOS ANGELES 2004

Universal Amphitheatre
Los Angeles, California – USA
30th January 2004

A bootleg of this concert is said to exist, but I have no information about it. If you do, I'd be very grateful if you could drop me a line and share it with your fellow bootleg collectors. Thanks!
From Nicko's diary:

We were playing 2 nights at Universal Amphitheater. We played there on BNW and liked the venue, good acoustics and the best back stage area anywhere. The promoter really does look after the band and their guests.

The gig was going really well, we weren't too rusty after a few days off and the travel, and then... there is yours truly playing along to Hallowed, when there is a great crash and half my drumset gets scattered by a flying Bruce... and not in a plane this time.
Bruce was sprinting along the top walkway which runs right behind my kit when he slipped on what we later found to be some residual cream from Janick's pie-ing on his birthday at the last show. At first we thought it was really serious. Janick was cradling his neck as though it was broken. Steve hadn't heard all this with all the din on stage and was looking round furiously at Janick as of course he had stopped playing! But Bruce is tough as old boots, he soon got up and just carried on. After the show we had a doctor come and check him out. He strapped him up pretty heavily but thankfully he was fine. And even more importantly so was my kit!!!!

Great night all in all. I wonder how he's going to feel tomorrow?

Sylph's version. The sound is excellent, although Japanese standards are usually better. Between some of the songs and speeches, you can hear a guy screaming his head off, which is quite annoying. But, as usual in Japan, the performance was great.
Nicko's bass drum skin breaks during 'The Trooper', so Bruce plays the William Tell Overture by slapping his cheeks. He also botches the lyrics of 'Lord Of The Flies'.

From Nicko's diary:

The show was fantastic. We played a blinder of a gig. There was however a problem for me, yet again I split me bass drum head. Right in the middle of the ‘Kin trooper, just before the solo. I could not believe it.
That’s two heads split in the last month.
‘Kin great. So Bruce and I did the comedy routine and he did his William Tell overture bit with his mouth while I held the mic for him. Pete and Robbie did a great job of changing the head for me. They had it done in about 5 minutes. Well, practice makes perfect AAAHHHEE!!!!!!
After the head was changed we got on with the rest of the show.
It went great. The only thing that was a bit off-putting was that in between the songs there was almost silence from the audience. It’s the way it is in Japan, but it can still make you feel bit like your going down like a fart in a two-man submarine, but boy, they sure let you know how they appreciate you after you finish a tune. Loud and intense. Lovely jubbly.

This is the audio taken from the Saitama DVD. I've EQ'd the sounda little to make the show a little clearer. Enjoy! Since this was recorded on video camera, there wasn't a tape change until after the song Iron Maiden. I have added a cross-fade to this section between Iron Maiden and the encores. (IronCross)

From Nicko's diary:

We were due on stage at 7 o-clock, a late one, AAAHHHEEE!

We had a great night.
Just at the top of the show, Bruce had a problem occur with his back. He could hardly walk at one point. I was very worried about him. He did a great job of getting through the show, what with him being in such obvious pain.
We had a great last gig. The band played so very well that evening and it was a good feeling to know that we played so well.

Bruce wound the evening up by thanking all of our wonderful crew that have made this tour so easy and successful for us. He also thanked everyone that had been involved from the record company right through to the promoter.
But the greatest praise and thanks went to all our fans out there in Japan.
They all made us feel so welcome.
I love to tour Japan. It is a most invigorating place. The people and our fans are very cool. Well mannered and gracious. The rest of the world could be such a happier place if it took to heart some of the more gentle ways and customs of these wonderful people.
Thank you to everyone that I met in Japan, and to all of our fans from around the world, a great big heart felt thank you to you all as well.
This tour has been one of the best if not THE best ever!
My love to you all.
